It is easy to feel panic at the mere thought of a dental emergency. After all, they involve everything from extreme pain to the actual loss of a tooth. At Henrickson Dental in Maplewood, MN we offer rapid treatment to address almost any possible dental emergency. As your dentist in Maplewood, we understand that emergency dental care is also part of regular dental health and wellness.
However, there is much you can do to protect your oral health in the event of a dental emergency, and these are things we recommend you do immediately after any sort of dental emergency strikes:
Dislodged tooth – It won’t matter exactly why a tooth was knocked out, but if you can find it, we may be able to save it. Of course, if the tooth was dislodged by a strong blow to the face, and you fear that some sort of additional injury has occurred to the jaw, gum or soft tissue, don’t wait to get treatment and head to a medical provider. If, however, it was only the tooth and you can retrieve it, remember to hold it by the crown. Gently rinse the tooth (do not scrub it) and see if it will slide into place. If not, soak it in milk and head to the office! If a tooth is not knocked out but just knocked loose, do not pull it or move it. Put a cold compress on your face and head to the office immediately.
Broken tooth – A chipped or cracked tooth is not a true dental emergency, but call us anyway to book a visit as soon as possible. If the tooth is actually broken, try to find the pieces, and gently rinse the mouth to help stop the bleeding. Never put pressure on the area as it can cause pain and worsen the issue. Consider a missing filling or restoration in this category, and book a visit as soon as you can to limit the damage and get this issue addressed straight away.
Severe pain – There are many reasons that you may be experiencing extreme pain. It could range from extreme tooth decay to an abscess, and you will need to take a pain reliever, reduce swelling with a cold compress, and book a visit with us as quickly as you can.
