Though many people still harbor some outdated views and opinions of dentures, we know them to be one of the more advanced methods of restorative dentistry available. At Henrickson Dental in Maplewood, MN we offer the skilled treatment of a dentures specialist who ensures that your dentures look entirely natural, fit snugly and enable you to look, speak and eat like you have always done. We also ensure that all patients understand dentures aftercare to deliver the very best results.
As your trusted dentist in Maplewood, we will tell you that there are two phases of dentures aftercare. The first is in the hours and days after you first receive your dentures. The second phase is in the months and years afterward.
The first 24 hours of dentures aftercare is actually very simple. We place the dentures and ask you to wear them without removing them for the next 24 hours. After that, you can take them out, do regular oral hygiene and give the soft tissue a bit of time to rest and recover. If you notice any discomfort or rubbing, you need to get in touch and come in for an adjustment.
Then, you need to recognize that it will take a bit of time to become familiar with wearing them for daily life. Be careful with what you eat and remember to remove them at night to give the gums a bit of time to relax and recover.
After you are accustomed to wearing your dentures, you will then have only regular oral hygiene to perform. If you have partial dentures, you will continue to do the same brushing, flossing and oral hygiene visits as before. You will also add a bit of dentures care into your daily routine. This includes gently cleaning the dentures, soaking them in a treatment solution overnight, and always cleaning the teeth and gums after eating and before reinserting dentures (if you opt to remove them for eating).
Regular visits to our office remain a necessity as we still need to do exams, check on the condition of your gums and ensure you are enjoying optimal oral health. With proper care, your dentures will last from five to ten years before you need to consider replacing them.
